Bulldogs ranked 15th in the
city in El Paso Times Top 30 Poll
SOCORRO -- The most repeated word at a
Socorro High School football practice must be
"toughness." The Bulldogs' first-year coach,
Ronnie Hernandez, spends every practice
preaching about toughness, and in a few weeks
he will be able to tell if it has sunk in. "They've
got to be mentally tough,"Hernandez said.
"They've got to be able to put mind over matter."
Socorro is bringing back five starters on offense
and five on defense from last year's 3-7 team, 2-6
in District 1-5A. Some of the key seniors will be
tailback Israel Apodaca (5-9, 180), tight end
Jimmy Dominguez (6-0, 190), defensive back
Charlie Garcia (5-9, 160), fullback Derek
Hagelsieb (5-6, 180), offensive tackle Eddie
Rueda (5-9, 205) and defensive lineman Jacob
Franco (5-11, 220).
The Bulldogs are dealing with a variety of
changes this season. "We have a new coach,
new rules and playbook," Garcia said. "You're
going to experience a whole new intensity on the
field, a whole new everything." If Socorro is
going to start picking up the wins, Hernandez
has emphasized, it will begin in the trenches.
Rueda said the offensive line will put in the work.
"We have to be the leaders up front and move the
line forward," Rueda said. "Since I've been here,
we haven't made the playoffs and it would be
nice to finally make it."
Hernandez said he does not know who his
starting quarterback will be, but the competition
is open between Josh Peña (5-9, 165) and
George Roman (5-8, 170). "They say defenses
win championships. Well, if you are not scoring
points, then you don't get to play for those
championships," Hernandez said. "I know for a
fact that if we can get the offense rolling, our
defense will play so much better."
Socorro's district wins last year came against
Eastwood and Hanks.
The Bulldogs want to replicate the feeling of
those two games every week this season. "We
try to get that energy we had in those two games
and bring it out on the field," Dominguez said.
"Everything is brand new, so we're getting used
to it."
